For their 80th Anniversary Year Ballarat National Theatre are presenting Mr Bailey’s Minder by Debra Oswald. This award-winning Australian play is to be to be directed by Linda Davey, a director and theatre-maker with over 40 years’ experience in community, professional, academic and applied theatre settings in Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane and now in Victoria.

Audition date: Saturday 3rd March

Show Dates: 7th July - 14th July
(Production Week: 29th June - 6th July)

Abusive, cantankerous and burned out by booze; Leo Bailey is one of Australia's national treasures. A gifted painter and chronic alcoholic, he can no longer take care of himself. His resentful daughter has been through a succession of minders, until Therese comes along, fresh out of jail and determined to make a go of her limited options.

Mr Bailey's Minder is a tough, funny and big-hearted play. It's about shame and judgement, about who deserves to be loved and forgiven. It looks at how people exploit each other and where they find beauty; and the qualities of transcendence, letting go and forgiveness.

This is a four-hander; an ensemble piece that requires 4 very skilled actors.

THERESE - late 20s
On-stage for the entire play. Streetwise, boisterous, defensive, volatile

MARGO - 40ish
Executive businesswoman - brittle

LEO - 65+
Central Character. Artist - volatile, cantankerous, unwell, shows signs of years of boozing.

*GAVIN - 30s
Con man - suave, smooth

*KARL - about 30
Tradesman - quiet, polite, kind

*Note - same actor likely to play both GAVIN and KARL. This actor must be able to play two characters that alert us to the dark and light of humanity.
